A grass fire at Craig, East Bank, Demerara, which threatened two major transmission lines operated by the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL), was extinguished following the quick response of firefighters and GPL engineers.
In separate social media posts, GPL and the Guyana Fire Service confirmed that the blaze, which burnt in close proximity to the utility company’s L1 and L3 transmission lines, was brought under control before it could damage the electrical infrastructure.
The transmission lines connect the Garden of Eden and Grove substations.
GPL expressed appreciation to the fire service team from the Diamond Fire Station for their prompt response and assistance in containing and extinguishing the fire.
The company also thanked all those involved in protecting the transmission infrastructure.
The Guyana Fire Service said firefighters launched operations to contain the blaze and prevent potential damage to the transmission lines. The operation was carried out in coordination with GPL engineers.
Both agencies have urged members of the public to refrain from indiscriminate burning, particularly near electrical infrastructure.
GPL warned that grass and vegetation fires in close proximity to electrical facilities can damage the network, cause power service interruptions and pose serious safety risks.
The utility company advised anyone who observes a grass or vegetation fire to maintain a safe distance and immediately contact the Guyana Fire Service on 912.
