As part of its sensitisation campaign, the NGO recently hosted a Cancer Awareness Health Booth at the Wisroc/Amelia’s Ward minibus park in Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
The initiative, which was held under the theme, “It’s a big deal”, was done in collaboration with the Adolescents Health Department of the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the Linden Fund USA, Office of the Linden Mayor and the Vernon Todd Foundation.
During the educational outreach exercise, a number of hampers and bags were also distributed to cancer survivors.
FTCSF Director, Vernon Todd noted that too often, precious lives are interrupted or cut short by cancer. He stressed that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. “Breast cancer does not discriminate, it strikes people of all races, ages, and income levels. As we raise awareness of this disease and its symptoms so we can more easily identify it and more effectively treat it. This month, as we honour those whose lives were tragically cut short by cancer and as we stand with their families, let us arm ourselves with the best knowledge, tools and resources available to fight this devastating disease”, he noted.
Todd also highlighted that regular screenings and quality care are vital to improving outcomes for millions of people worldwide.
“…and we are making strides in improving treatment options. Women and men can take precautionary action on their own by talking with their healthcare providers about what they can do to lower their individual risk factors and learning about what tests are right for them”, he encouraged.
During the exercise, residents were informed of preventative health measures by peer educators and other healthcare professionals.
