Derrel Garcia scored a dramatic injury-time winner as Guyana’s Elite League champions Slingerz Football Club (FC) defeated Trinidad and Tobago’s Prison Service FC 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller to advance to the quarter-finals of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield.
The 19-year-old Trinidadian midfielder struck in the fourth minute of added time to complete a spirited comeback by Slingerz in their round-of-16 encounter in Trinidad and Tobago.
Kemar Beckford continued his strong goalscoring form with another brace, while Neron Barrow and Garcia also found the net for the Guyanese club.
Beckford gave Slingerz the lead in the 17th minute, but Prison Service responded through Paul Ronell in the 32nd minute before Ezekiel Kesar struck seven minutes later to hand the Trinidadian side a 2-1 advantage at half-time.
Slingerz returned with greater urgency in the second half, and Beckford restored parity in the 58th minute with his second goal of the match.
Barrow then continued his rich run of form by putting Slingerz ahead in the 67th minute as the Guyanese champions completed the turnaround.
The closing stages produced further drama, with Garcia scoring in the 90+4th minute to extend Slingerz’s advantage to 4-2.
The Prison Service refused to surrender and pulled another goal back in the 90+7th minute, but Slingerz held on during the anxious final moments to secure their place in the last eight.
Slingerz will now await confirmation of their quarter-final opponent. The quarter-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, July 28.
