Garrett hopes Sport Lisbon try out inspires younger footballers

Collin Powell said ” A dream does not come through magic, it takes sweat, determination and hard work” and teenager Jeremy Garrett, whose opportunity at a try out at renowned European football club Sporting Lisbon is one which materialised due to his hard work on and off the field.

Garrett is set to leave Guyana this week destined to Portugal where he will train at the club’s youth academy which has seen the likes of world renowned footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani all playing their elementary stages of football at the club.

The audition which came as a reality due to Hall-Of-Famer and Guyana’s International Football Ambassador, Alex Bunbury is seen by the footballer as one which can now inspire other young footballers that dreams can come through in the sport if they just work hard and be patient.

Quizzed on what he feels he can accomplish at the club, the Fruta Conquerors player responded “I think I will accomplish a greater knowledge of the game; my goal is not to only look out for myself since I see this as an opportunity to inspire youngsters that anything is possible, I never dream of this happening.”

The Chase Academic Foundation student who led his school to the title at this year’s Digicel School’s Football Championship has been undergoing intense fitness sessions at the Top End Gym in order to fully peak at the try out and Garrett says it is going good.

Now the days for the short stint are drawing closer and chance to catapult into a successful career in football is at stake, the player says that he feels more excited than nervous.

“I won’t use the term nervous but rather excited since I have played at the senior level in club football and also played for my country; being selected would be a great honour for me and my family and it’s just a phenomenal feeling,” the player confidently stated.

The footballer who has donned national colours playing for the  under-17 team was called up to be a part of the training camp of the Senior team in their preparations for the Caribbean Cup, says he is extremely grateful for the support of Alex Bunbury and all other persons who helped to make the trip a reality.
