The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry on Monday kick-started its annual Early-Savers Summer Camp for members of GBTI’s Early Savers Club, who were randomly selected to participate.

The one-week camp is being held at the GBTI’s recreational facility at Bel Air Park, Georgetown, and caters for two age groups: 7-10 years old, for which sessions are conducted in the mornings; and 11 to 15 years old, for which sessions are conducted in the afternoons.
This year’s camp has also seen collaboration of the locally televised children’s programme “Kids Today, Leaders Tomorrow”, who were also actively involved in the morning sessions of the camp.
According to GBTI Public Relations and Marketing Manager Pamela Binda, the camp is geared at engaging the young minds in educational programmes and arts and crafts, while enlightening them on Guyana’s rich folklore.
Binda emphasised that the aim of the camp is to put literacy on the front agenda for the children, since technology has, over the years, taken over.
“I think we need to push that and promote that… Technology has taken over the new generation, and so we want to bring back literacy into our little Early Savers’ account,” she said.
She related that the programme incorporates two segments, a literacy session and an arts and crafts session. The children will also be informed of Guyana’s local folk tales, narrated by poplar story teller Alan Fenty.
Binda urges members of the public to get on board with GBTI, and be the next lucky participant in next year’s summer camp.
“We encourage persons out there: If you don’t have an Early Savers Account, come with GBTI, sigh up with us and enjoy the myriad of benefits that we offer”. She urged.
At lease thirty active members of the Early Savers Club were randomly selected in two groups of 15 each, the first being between the ages of 7 and 11, and the other being between 12 and 15. The morning session is allocated to the younger group, while the latter group is engaged in the afternoon session.
The camp will come to an end on Friday with a mini exhibition of the art pieces and a presentation ceremony for the winners of the best arts and craft projects.
