In the red ball match, a see-saw encounter saw Jonathan Jordan emerging victorious 10-8 over Niomi Erskine. In the orange ball match, Raymond Paul won 10-2 against Wazim Juman. In the green ball match, Shania Juman defeated Timmax Ferreira; while in the yellow ball match, Ronela Jordan defeated Gerald Scotland 4-2 and 4-1.
The adults’ competition was easily won by Renata Jordan 10-7 as she made light work of her opponent Monique Boyan.
At the end of the camp, GBTI Diamond Branch Manager Roxanne Welcome, in remarks made at the venue — the GBTI Diamond Branch’s Lawn Tennis Courts — said, “The summer camp that was offered is a health alternative for the children during the summer.
“We don’t want you to sit and scroll, but we want you to do some physical activity. We believe that while it’s good to have an education, it is essential to be fit also. So this has been our 8th year sponsoring this competition, and we want to continue to do so in the near future.”
Vice President of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GTTA), Christy Campbell, said this has been the largest turnout since the camp was inaugurated.
A total of 65 students participated. Campbell also noted that the large turnout speaks well for youth development in tennis, while highlighting the effort of Junior Coach Andre Erskine, who has been a part of the camp for the last three years.
