GCB U-17 50-Over tournament: Berbice beat Rising Stars by 13 runs

The Berbice Under-17 cricket team have defeated the Guyana Cricket Board’s Rising Stars Under-17 team by 13 runs in the GCB Under-17 Inter-County 50-Over tournament played at La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara.

Batting first, Berbice posted 132-9 in a game reduced by rain to 45 overs, then restricted Rising Stars to 119 all out in 45 overs. Player of the match Matthew Pottoya, who plays locally for Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, led the way for Berbice with 44 runs from 53 balls in an innings that included three sixes and one four. Rose Hall Canje’s Sanjay Algoo and Romesh Bharat each made 15 runs, while extras contributed 28 runs to the total.
Wavell Allen was the pick of the Rising Stars bowlers with 3-15 from five overs, while Nityanand Mathura returned figures of 2-21.
In reply, Rising Stars lost wickets at regular intervals. Only Nyron Hicks offered resistance with his 40-ball 29; and Allen, who made 25 from 38 balls, batted at number ten.
Berbice gave 18 extras to Rising Stars, but still ensured a 13-run win. Leg-spinner Sanjay Algoo, who claimed 3-20, was the pick of the bowlers, while Afraz Budhoo had 2-20 and Salim Khan had 2-21.
