― Hikers stumble at final hurdle

Two of the premier indoor hockey teams in Guyana, GCC smashed Notre Dame in the Veterans category while Pepsi Hikers fought hard but lost to Queens Park Cricket Club (QPCC) in the finals in the Men’s category of the 12th Annual Ventures Hockey Club Indoor Hockey Tournament at the Woodbrook Youth Facility in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday.
In the Veteran’s match up GCC were on a whole different level when they came up to an out-of-sorts Notre Dame team on their way to a 17-1 demolition lead by Patrick Edgill with seven goals.

Damon Woodroffe started proceedings with a goal in the first minute before Dwayne Scott followed suit two minutes later and Alan Fernandes in the 5th minute. Philip Fernandes then got into the action in the 8th, while Devin Hooper marked his name on the scoreboard in the 9th before Philip returned for his second in the 10th.
Edgill then got into the feast, blasting the first of his seven goals in the 11th. Marcus Fiedtkou and Alan scored in the 17th and 18th respectively before handing over to Edgill who scored consecutive goals in the 25th, 26th and 27th minutes. Woodroffe returned for his double in the 31st while Edgill netted three more in the 32nd, 34th and 40th as Alan closed off the match with his hat trick goal in the last minute of play.
Selwyn King scored the consolation goal for Notre Dame when he found the back of the net in the 21st minute.
However, Pepsi Hikers did not share similar success as they fell short to QPCC in the finals of the men’s division 4-6. Jordon Reynos scored in the first minute of play for QPCC while Jordan Vieira scored in the 2nd and Reynos in the 4th to give the home team an instant 3-0 lead before Robert France reduced the deficit for Hikers one minute after.
Darren Cowie then extended the lead back to three with a goal in the 14th for the hosts.
However, Andrew Steward found the back of the net in the 19th to close the first half 4-2.
Devin Munroe scored in the 25th in an attempt to have Hikers catch up, however, Reynos replied with a goal in the 28th to have the score sit at 5-3. Jamarj Assanah netted for Hikers in the 37th but Aidan De Gannes produced a beauty in the 40th to seal the deal for the new champions, QPCC.
