GDF hamstring Cougars, Tigers maul Kings

The Guyana Football Federation’s Elite League continued on Wednesday, September 19, at the Georgetown Football Club ground with a double-header that turned out to be a nail-biter.
At the end of the night, supporters of city sides Western Tigers and Guyana Defence Force (GDF) football clubs went home satisfied.
When the referee signalled the start of the first match, GDF playing against Cougars, the army side seemed determined for success, with a display about their demeanor that said something big was coming. They pounced at every opportunity given to them, and found the back of the net in the second minute through the effort of number 11, Darrell George.
But that wasn’t the last for the soldiers, it would seem they were at war and fighting for survival, as Jeffrey Perreira also found the back of the Cougars net in the 33rd minute, to give the soldiers a 2-0 lead.
They weren’t finished yet; five minutes later, Delwin Fraser pierced the uprights to put the score at 3-0 at half time, with an all but obliterated Cougars in defence. With a substantial lead, the soldiers could have defended their goals, but they continued to play on the offence as they wiped the floor with the Cougars. The fourth goal was scored in the 65th minute by Kenneth Oparaemetuche. It was now 4-0, and GDF were cruising, but it wasn’t over, as another goal was scored in the 81st minute by Cargill Younge, who further helped extend the soldiers’ lead.

In a futile effort, the Cougars managed to score a goal in the 82nd minute when Mark Wronge slipped one in, but it was a little too late for them. In the 90th minute, Younge returned to haunt the Cougars when he signed off the soldiers’ night by adding insult to injury, ending the match with the score on 6-1 in favour of the army.
The next match saw Western Tigers playing against Victoria Kings. The Kings took the lead when Aiden Lawrence scored within the first ten minutes of the game. However, the Tigers pounced at the opening they received in the 14th minute, and that allowed Daniel Wilson to score the equalizer.
From thereon it was pretty much back-and-forth, as both teams, in their quest to get ahead, tried a number of strategies known in the football realm. They attacked hard, and even made some desperate substitutions; but at the half, the score was still 1-1.
With fulltime drawing near, Tigers blazed one into the back of the Kings net, to take the lead to 2-1. The Kings tried to equalize, but the Tigers were too fired up to allow that to happen.
