Griffith beats “Padlock” and company to clinch Carlton Wheelers 44-mile race

Team Evolution’s Christopher “Chicken Legs” Griffith was too hot to handle as he clinched the Carlton Wheelers 44-mile cycling race on the West Demerara corridor, stopping the clock at one hour 46 minutes and 20 seconds.

The race, which took place in collaboration with David Persaud Investments Ltd of Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara, pedalled off from Schoonord and proceeded to Bushy Park at Parika before returning to finish at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Andre “Padlock” Green continued his form with second place

Griffith finished ahead of the in-form Andre “Padlock” Green (second); Kemuel Moses (third); Curtis Dey (fourth); Kwame “Keyman” Ridley (fifth) and Alanzo Ambrose (sixth), rounding out the top seniors who shared the six sprint prizes on offer. In the veterans’ category, Ridley finished first followed by Alex Mendes and Warren McKay. Clavecia Spencer was the lone female rider on show.
This race was held in memory of David Persaud, the late Managing Director of David Persaud Investments Ltd, who played and captained North Cote second division team for the Everest Cricket Club, and also played and captained First Division Case Cup at a time when Everest was not one of the premier clubs.

Christopher Griffith claimed the top spot

Persaud was also one of the few captains to win two major trophies in a single year – the Case and Rothmans Cups.
Cycling will continue on August 29 at 08:00h, on the outer circuit of the National Park. This lucrative 15-lap event is sponsored by Touche Kosmetics, and the winner of the open category would bag a cash prize of $60,000.
The Veterans under-50 and over-50 will ride for 10 laps, and each winner thereof will be rewarded with $40,000. Top female, junior and juvenile riders will each be rewarded with $40,000 in their 10-lap race. The masters will have the option to choose which race they prefer to participate in on the day, either the Open or Masters event. (Brandon Corlette)
