Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” G/town zone kicks off Wednesday

– $1M winner’s purse up for grabs

The long-awaited conclusion of the 2025 Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” streetball competition is set to resume on Wednesday, April 15, with organisers confirming that the almost year-long delay was due to Guyana’s 2025 General and Regional Elections.
Banks DIH Sales and Marketing Executive Lee Baptiste explained that the interruption was necessary to accommodate the national electoral process, but noted that preparations were now in place for a structured and timely finish to the competition.
Brand Manager of Guinness, Jeoff Clement, announced that the Georgetown leg of the tournament will kick off on Wednesday and run over six playing days, culminating in the final on May 1. He added that the National Championships are scheduled for May 8, one week after the conclusion of the Georgetown segment.
Clement emphasised expectations for the remainder of the tournament, stating that organisers anticipate a high level of competitiveness and discipline from teams. He urged participants to cooperate with officials to ensure the games were conducted in an orderly manner. Clement also announced the winning team will receive a top prize of $1 million.

Quizzed about the start of this year’s competition, Baptiste said the 2026 season would be tightly scheduled, as the brand has several other activities planned throughout the year. He noted that securing an appropriate window for the competition was critical moving forward.
He also highlighted the significance of the tournament to community development, stating that street football continued to provide a platform for players to represent their communities and compete at a high level. According to Baptiste, the initiative remains a key part of the brand’s effort to give back while fostering positive engagement and healthy competition.
Baptiste expressed appreciation to Colours Boutique for its continued support since the inception of the tournament. He also thanked the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, along with the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Fire Service and other stakeholders for their contributions to the successful staging of the event.
Looking ahead, Baptiste revealed plans to expand the tournament’s reach, including the reinstatement of the East Coast Demerara leg, with a venue now secured at Beterverwagting. He also indicated that Port Kaituma is being considered as a new addition, while competitions are expected to continue across Essequibo, Berbice, Linden and Bartica.
The Georgetown segment of the competition will be played in a direct-elimination format beginning from a round of 32. While the winner will pocket $1 million, second place will receive $400,000, third place $200,000 and fourth place $100,000.
