Guyana bow out at Inter-Guiana Under-21 volleyball tournament

Guyana experienced mixed fortunes with their male and female teams in some challenging sets at the Inter-Guianas Under-21 volleyball tournament in Cayenne, French Guiana from February 27-29.
This encounter saw the Guyana males drawing first blood 22-25, 25-16, 22-25, 26-24, and 15-11. Owing to fatigue after spending three days in Suriname to uplift visas, coupled with the fact that bedtime was permissible until 03:00h on the first night, in French Guiana, it was seen that the Guyanese males faltered in the second encounter with Suriname. They lost 3-1 sets, 25-22, 26-24, 22-25 and 25-23. When the aggregate of points was checked, Suriname and French Guiana were the teams who had qualified for the final. However, the Suriname setter suffered an ailment and had to be taken to hospital for treatment; as such, French Guiana had an easy victory.

In the female category, after having to play upon arrival following a tiring seven-hour journey, the Guyanese women went under to French Guiana 3 to 0. Against Suriname, they put up a better fight but went down 3 to 0 again, with the score reading 25-23, 26-24, 25-17. Kristoff Sheppard was the only recipient of an award for best server.

In an exclusive interview with Guyana Times Sport, Head of Guyanese volleyball, Levi Nedd said, “I am not complaining because we lost, but tiredness was a major factor. I feel that we could have done better and as such, better preparation should have been made. I am still proud of the team; they are young and I know they gave their all, mentally and physically. The females did better than last year as well, but I would like us to have a bigger selection of players to choose from, so that when competitions come, we can have that pool to select from; that is what we will focus on this year.”
