The Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China collaborated to host a mesmerizing Zhejiang Wu Opera performance on Tuesday evening, cementing cultural ties between the two countries.
The captivating performance, held at the National Cultural Centre, was presented by the renowned Zhejiang Wu Opera Research Centre, and served as a vibrant platform to promote Guyana-China cultural exchanges and foster cordial relations.
Chinese Ambassador Guo Haiyan relayed that Guyana is the fiftieth country the opera has visited to display their exuberant talent pieces.

“Cultural exchanges are very important part China-Guyana relations…The Chinese culture is very rich and colourful. For example, there are over 300 local operas in China, of which the Zhejiang Wu Opera is an outstanding representative, and have visited many countries. Last week, they were in Mexico, participating in an international art festival, and that was a great success,” the diplomat said in her remarks.
Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Charles Ramson took the opportunity to speak on the distinguished history which both countries have shared. He indicated that culture has been one area in which Guyana has been seeking to collaborate with the Chinese.
Ramson told the audience, “We’re very excited about the fact that this has actually happened, and it happened quickly…We also look forward to deepening our relationship with the Government and People of China.”
Guyana and China celebrated 50 years of bilateral relations last year. In July, the two nations vowed to build a closer community with a shared future when Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Guyanese President Dr Irfaan Ali in Chengdu, capital city of southwest China’s Sichuan Province.
