Guyana elevated to 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship

Two slots from the Group Stage of the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship, set to be staged in the Dominican Republic from February 22 to March 8, have been filled respectively by Guyana and St Kitts and Nevis. Guyana emerged from Group A, while Saint Kitts topped Group B.
The historic news was communicated to the acting General Secretary of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Rev. Ian Alves, by CONCACAF Director of Football Competitions, Carlos Fernandez.
Guyana had, in July 2019, made a clean sweep of Group A here at the Leonora Track and Field Facility with wins over Bermuda, Suriname, Saint Lucia, and Antigua & Barbuda.
Guyana’s ‘Lady Jags’ have now earned a spot in Group D of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship tournament, alongside Mexico, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico. Thus the third-placed teams from ‘Groups A and B’ in the Qualifying Round, Bermuda and Barbados respectively, would replace Guyana and Saint Kitts in the lower tier.

This development has been brought about by the CONCACAF Council concluding that hosts of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, Costa Rica and Panama, be granted berths in the marquee event and no longer be required to participate in the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship.
However, two slots remain for the World Cup tournament, and their filling would be determined by the champion and runner-up teams at the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship.
In that event, Guyana will open their campaign against Nicaragua on February 23rd, face-off with Puerto Rico on Feb 25th, and clash with Mexico on Feb 27th.
