Guyana suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guatemala in the men’s team table tennis competition on Saturday at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in the Dominican Republic.
The Guyanese were unable to convert several competitive periods into victories, with Guatemala secur
ing all three matches to complete the sweep.
Niran Bissu and Elishaba Johnson opened the contest against Luis Carrillo and Ian Morales in the doubles encounter. The Guyanese pair went down in straight games, losing 9-11, 6-11 and 5-11 for a 0-3 result.
National champion Shemar Britton then faced Sergio Carrillo in the second match. Britton lost the opening two games 4-11 and 6-11 before responding with an 11-7 victory in the third. However, Carrillo regained control in the fourth game, winning 11-7 to complete a 3-1 triumph.
Johnson returned for the third match against Morales and made a positive start with an 11-6 win in the opening game. Morales recovered to take the next three games 11-6, 11-2 and 11-6, securing another 3-1 victory and sealing the overall result for Guatemala.
The Guyanese men will return to action on Sunday against host nation the Dominican Republic as they seek to advance from the team stage of the regional competition.
Guyana’s men’s squad also includes Malachi Moore, while Chelsea Edghill and Jasmine Billingy will represent the country in the women’s events.
The players are expected to compete in the men’s team, singles and doubles competitions, along with the women’s singles and doubles and the mixed doubles events. The national team is being coached by Joel Alleyne.
