Guyana women beat Jamaica as men suffer double defeat in CAC 3×3 basketball

Guyana’s women produced a strong finish to defeat Jamaica 15-8, while the men suffered losses to Puerto Rico and Haiti in 3×3 basketball action on Saturday at the Sports Malecón Park.
The women’s Pool D contest remained close during the early stages, with the teams trading the lead before Guyana pulled away in the closing minutes.
Anaya Clemons led the victory with six points, including a key two-point basket that gave Guyana control and a buzzer-beating shot to complete the win. De Angelique Waithe added five points, while Ruth Adams contributed four, including a decisive two-pointer in the final minute.

Guyana shot 35 per cent from the field, compared with Jamaica’s 24 per cent. Chloe Wilson led Jamaica with three points, while Donae Brown and Miea Campbell scored two each.
The Guyanese men endured a difficult start to their Pool A campaign, losing 21-9 to Puerto Rico before going down 15-10 against Haiti.
Puerto Rico controlled the opening encounter from the start and completed the victory in just under nine minutes. Angel Matias led the winners with 11 points, while Christian Hinckson was Guyana’s leading scorer with four.
Guyana showed greater resistance against Haiti, with Travis Burnett briefly levelling the score at 3-3 through a two-point shot. However, Haiti regained control behind Fitz Salvant, who finished with a game-high eight points.

Akil Hughes scored three points for Guyana but suffered a serious throat and neck injury with 3:48 remaining. The game was stopped while he received medical attention before he was transported to hospital for further evaluation.
The Guyana Basketball Federation said it was awaiting an update on his condition.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s women were locked at 4-4 with hosts the Dominican Republic when their match was interrupted up to press time.
