GWI Board approves “Knowledge Tools Unit” to improve efficiency

The Guyana Water Inc (GWI) is moving away from traditional means of gathering information regarding system defects as its Board recently approved the establishment of a “Knowledge Tools Unit” that is geared at improving efficiency using technology. The disclosure comes against the corporation’s projected earnings of $5.8 billion in 2019.
GWI’s top management indicated that the unit will implement policies surrounding the authority’s usage of technological equipment. It was explained that the Knowledge Tools Unit will provide information on how the body can use technological tools to improve efficiency in the administrative, financial and technical departments.
One of these advancements already reported on was the GWI’s intent to the increase its fleet by 15,000 smart meters during this year. The body’s Managing Director, Dr Richard Van West-Charles, outlined that GWI will continue to utilise electronic loggers which give instantaneous data on when water pumps suffer mechanical failures.
He explained that previously, field staff were required to physically check to see when the pumps are damaged. However, this can be done electronically. In fact, it was revealed that the directors can now access the information on their mobile phones and laptop computers.
These measures are geared to reduce the loss that GWI said it encountered in 2018. It was, however, able to secure over $4 billion in revenue last year which was a 10 per cent increase from 2017. The GWI Board is headed by former Georgetown Mayor Patricia Chase-Green.
