Against a field of eminent athletes the likes of Rupert Perry, Linton Mentis and Elton Bollers, CARIFTA Gold Medallist Campton Caesar performed a dusting job to take gold in the Men’s 20 to 34-year-old 200-metre sprint when the Guyana Overseas-Based Sports Association (GOBSA) held its track and field meet at the Leonora Synthetic Track on Sunday.
Currently preparing for the South American Youth Championships slated for next weekend at the same venue, Caesar powered his way to victory in a time of 21.42s, with Perry coming in second with a time of 21.58s and Linton Mentis third with a time of 22.09s.
The National U-20 athletes continued their dominance in this event, with Daniel Williams taking gold in the Boys 16 to 17-year-old 200m sprint in a time of 22.10s, while fellow national athlete Jermain King had to settle for silver with a time of 23.06s. King was followed by Police Club’s Mark Solomon in 23.79s.
In the Boys 18 to 19-year-old 200m race, Jonathan Garnett (23.55s) edged Marcus Havercome (23.97s) to take gold.
In the 800m events, Shamar Morris (2:07.49s) took gold ahead of Joel Williams (2:10.02s) and Cordell Charles (2:10.99s) in the Boys 12-15; while, in the 16-17 category, Shamar Alleyne copped gold with 2:11.94s over Nicholas Daw (2:12.51s) and Carson Moe (2:16.03s).
Kevin David (2:15.56s) triumphed over Daniel Harvey (2:25.09s) by some distance to take first place in the Boys 18to 19-year-old 800m race, while in the men’s 20 to 34-year-old race over the same distance, GPF’s Quincy Morian took top spot in a time of 1:54.65s, with Samuel Lynch (1:55.29s) second and Anfernee Headecker (2:01.48s) third.
In the Females 12 to15-year-old 200m finals, Brianna Charles secured gold with 26.35s, while Princess Brown (26.86s) took silver and Odessa France (28.40s) bronze.
In the 16-17 Girls 200m race, Onasha Phillips (24.48s) pipped National teammate Kenisha Phillips (24.70s), with Tiffauna Garnett closing out the top three with a time of 26.21s.
In the main Female event, the Women’s 20 to 34-year-old 200m Finals, Alita Moore with a time of 25.07s won gold over Avon Samuels (25.85s), with Alisha Fortune (26.14s) taking bronze.
Triple Jumper Chantoba Bright took charge of her event, snapping up gold with a jump of 12.18m; with Ruth Sanmoogan taking silver at 11.14m and Aniqah Powley bronze with 10.62m.
Having dominated this weekend’s meet, the Guyana National U-20 athletes will be looking to take that rich vein of form into the South American U-20 Games, set to kick-off in less than 6 days. These games will be held at the Leonora Synthetic Track on June 3rd and 4th as Guyana hosts its first ever international athletics event.
