Hetmyer set to return to Caribbean after two-match PSL stint

Guyana and West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer has left Abu Dhabi, and is set to return to the Caribbean after playing only two matches for the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Hetmyer scored seven in his PSL debut, and did not bat in his second match.
The left-hander is in the West Indies provisional T20 squad that would play T20 series against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan. West Indies would play the first T20 against South Africa on June 26 in Grenada, and the players are expected to begin camp shortly.
On his social media platform, Hetmyer said: “It’s really sad that I only had the opportunity to be around the guys at Multan Sultans for just two games, but friendships were made, and I was very honoured to be part of such a wonderful group of guys. All the best for the rest of the tournament, guys.”
Prior to the start of the second half of the PSL, Hetmyer had said he was determined to learn something new. The 24-year-old has said that during times when people are confined to their biosecure bubbles, the only way to get through it is by making new friends and bonding with them.
“All you can do is just keep a smile on your face and try to enjoy being around people,” the West Indian cricketer said. He added that West Indian cricketers are no different, as they also enjoy themselves in the field while playing.
Hetmyer had indicated he was taking the remainder of the PSL in Abu Dhabi as an opportunity to learn and to acclimatise for the T20 World Cup, which is likely to be played in UAE.
“In every practice session, I’m trying as much as possible to gain as much experience in terms of knowing the bowlers and knowing the guys more, so I could probably go back at home and just work on my game,” Hetmyer said.
He also agreed that the bio-secure bubble could take a toll on players’ mental health, but said there is nothing much one can do, as this has become a new norm, at least in the cricket world, and it is being done to protect the health of people involved.
Hetmyer has represented West Indies in 16 Tests, 45 ODIs, and 27 T20Is. (Brandon Corlette)
