Hope demands improvement in all areas after opening ODI defeat

West Indies Captain Shai Hope has urged his team to learn quickly from their opening One Day International (ODI) defeat to Sri Lanka, admitting that shortcomings in all three facets of the game contributed to the visitors taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Reflecting on the 41-run loss at Sabina Park, Hope said there was no single factor behind the defeat but rather a collective failure to execute consistently with bat, ball, and in the field.
The Captain was particularly critical of his side’s fielding performance, highlighting an early dropped chance that allowed Sri Lanka to build a substantial total.

“We gave a chance first ball of the game,” Hope said. “When you give great players the opportunity to go again, it’s always going to be difficult. You’re going to put yourself on the back foot every single time and be playing catch-up.”
Hope also felt the bowlers could have exercised greater discipline, especially during the opening stages of Sri Lanka’s innings.
“We know the Sri Lankan batters tend to prey on that width that we tend to give them. We’ve got to tighten up the lines in the next game,” he noted.
While acknowledging positive starts with the bat, Hope expressed frustration at the team’s inability to convert promising positions into match-winning performances.
The white-ball Captain shared, “Openers got off to a great start once again, and then we just keep finding ways to get out.” We’ve got to take more responsibility as batters, take the game as deep as we can and find ways to win games from any position.”
Despite the disappointing result, Hope remains focused on the remainder of the series and stressed the importance of moving forward rather than dwelling on the defeat.
“You need to put it away. You can’t change anything that’s happened. What’s gone is gone. The past is the past,” he said.
The West Indies skipper believes communication and adaptability will be key as his side prepares for the second ODI.
“We’ve got to keep talking, keep communicating and ensure that we have all the right remedies to come out victorious next game and make it 1-1 at the end of it.”
Sri Lanka will now look to seal the series when the second ODI takes place on Saturday, June 6, at 15:30h, while the West Indies will be aiming to level the contest and keep the series alive.
