Just as he was warning his family of the dangers of animals on the roadways, a vehicle driven by a 29-year-old man collided head on with a stallion along the pitch-dark access road into the Mocha Scheme on the East Bank of Demerara.
Franky Morphine was travelling in his motorcar PNN 4631, enjoying the company of his two female cousins and their children, ages five and seven years old, when things took a turn for the worse.
As he was nearing his destination, a horse strutted out from the bushes and into the path of the moving vehicle.
Believing the long stretch of road to be completely desolate at 21:00h, Morphine was caught completely off guard and unable to swerve out of the way in time after he noticed the stray animal running onto the roadway.
The horse crashed through the windshield of the car, decapitating the animal instantly.
When Guyana Times reached on the scene, a small crowd had gathered to render assistance as Police ranks scribbled down details of what transpired in their notepads.
Judging from the tyre marks which were burned out on the road, bystanders concluded that the driver was speeding.
One resident told this newspaper that drivers typically use the road recklessly, driving as a fast rate.
However, Morphine denied speeding and blamed the absence of functioning streetlights for the unfortunate accident.
“I was cruising coming in. I does normally hold my lane but remember this is a lonely road so I end up taking the middle. So I was telling my cousin that you gotto be careful on this road because you does normally get stray horse and cows and them thing and as soon as I tell she duh, bap! He make a dash and come out from the corner and make a dash in front the car,” he related.
Guyana Times understands that neither the driver of the vehicle nor the passengers were seriously hurt. However, the gruesome demise of the horse may have lasting impressions on the minds of the passengers.
Just in April, Mocha residents heightened calls for streetlights to be installed along the dark roadway after a motorcyclist met his demise when he too collided with a horse along the same access road.
Streetlights were subsequently installed however they are yet to be functional.
