International horses in last-minute practice

With just five days to go before the historic 10th annual Guyana Cup horse racing tournament at the Port Mourant Turf Club, Berbice, trainers are pushing their international horses to get in a few last-minute sessions and become acclimatised.

However, the weather is making trainers’ lives difficult, with frequent showers.

Compton Sancho, who is part of the committee for the horse racing meet, noted that the weather was proving to be unfriendly.

Despite this, the track remains in good condition thanks to the ground staff attached to the turf club who have done a tremendous job in combating the rains.

Sancho indicated that the likes of US-based “King’s Knight” has managed to train extensively along with Jamaican bred “Release the Beast” and “Don’t Blame the Jockey” (USA), all representing the Jumbo Jet Stable. These horses are looking to lift the name of the stable high and win the Cup.

Serious competition is expected from “Call Me Boss” out of Jamaica, running for the Chris Jagdeo Stable; “CP Got Even” (USA), representing Dennis De Roop; Fazil Abibola’s “Big Man Boss”(Jamaica) and “Lady Budapeep” from the USA.

But all eyes will be set on the Karibee Rice Stable’s “Brave Sky” and “Golden Blue Echo”, both out of the USA as well as Sheriff’s Stable’s “Spit Fire” (Jamaica) and “Princess She’s Not” (USA).

The Georgetown contingent will also be in action as “Red Jet” out of the Sundar Stable comes into the competition, while “Red Region” from Mahaica will be representing the Baker Stable.

In action also will be “Liquid Lion”, also from the Baker Stable; “Quiet Dancer” running for the Ellicock Stable and “Blue Lightning” from Shocking Racing Stable.

Over $30 million will be up for grabs, making this the largest payout in the history of horse racing in the Caribbean.
