Labourer fined $30,000, to perform community service for ganja trafficking

A 20-year-old labourer of Surama Village, North Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) has been charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Bravin Jacobs, called “Boots”, was charged under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10, in connection with 34 grams of cannabis found on Friday, May 2, 2026, at Surama Village.

Jacobs appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded guilty. The court imposed a fine of $30,000 and ordered six months of community service at the Annai Police Station, starting May 8. He was also directed to attend drug counselling and guidance sessions at Welfare Services for a period of three months.
