Leguan man in custody for beating his uncle to death over plantains

A 51-year-old farmer is now dead after he was beaten to death, by his nephew, over some plantains.

The dead man has been identified as Aubrey Jonas called Badja of Phoenix, Leguan Island, Essequibo River.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 14:55h, according to the Police in a statement.

On the day in question, The 27-year-old suspected was seen by one of his cousins entering the dead man’s farm and picking some plantains. This resulted in Jonas confronting his nephew with a cutlass over the plantains.

The Police said that the dead man told his nephew “you touch the plantains and you gone see wa gon happen to you”. With that they started arguing and subsequently went their separate ways.

Shortly after the suspect armed himself with a knife and went to the Phoenix Koker and sat. As the deceased was walking past him heading into the village, they started arguing again.

Jonas then lashed his nephew with his cutlass on his leg. This resulted in the suspect going into his mother’s yard and arming himself with a piece of wood which he used to deal several lashes to the Jonas’ head resulting in injuries.

The suspect then made good his escape on foot.

The now deceased was picked up by his niece – who had videoed what transpired – and others and taken to Leguan Cottage Hospital.

While being treated for his injuries, the victim eventually succumbed about 16:00h.

About 17:00h, acting on information received, police went to an abandoned house in Phoenix Leguan, where the suspect was contacted, told of the allegations and arrested.

Jonas’ body is presently at the Leguan Cottage Hospital Mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
