Local democratic organs commence elections

The annual internal elections for the nine municipalities and 62 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) will be held by December 16 this year, according to the Communities Ministry.
Some councils have already begun their elections, with Best/Klien NDC taking the lead, holding their elections on Friday, November 18.

The Good Hope/Hydronie NDC was scheduled to hold elections on Monday, November 21, while La Grange/Nismes is slated for November 23.
The NDC at Vergenoegen/Greenwich Park, on the East Bank Essequibo has announced that elections will be held on Thursday, November 24.
There are still some councils that have not yet finalised a date for elections.
The internal elections are for electing the mayors and deputy mayors of the various municipalities, as well as the chairs and vice chairs.
The annual elections are in keeping with Section 28 (2) of the Local Government Act Chapter 28:02 and Chapter 28:01 of the Municipal and District Council Act.
The Communities Ministry reminded all councils that their budgets and work programmes for 2017 are to be completed and submitted to the Ministry of Communities by November 15, for purposes of notification. The work programmes are also to be prominently displayed by the councils for public perusal.
