Mahadeo, McDonald secure third place at HYROX competition in Suriname

Guyanese athletes Dillon Mahadeo and Jamie McDonald made an impressive debut at the HYROX Fitness competition in Suriname over the weekend, securing third place in the Doubles division while representing Team Fitness Express.
The pair finished behind Team Tjauwmin Paradijs and The Apex Hoppers in a competition that attracted athletes with greater experience in the growing international fitness discipline.

Mahadeo, a well-known fitness personality, and McDonald, a businessman and fitness enthusiast, were among four Guyanese athletes who participated in the event, marking the country’s first involvement in the competition.
Thurston Pearce and Anatola Ramsarran were the other Guyanese representatives, competing in the Individual division.
Following their podium finish, Mahadeo and McDonald expressed satisfaction with their performances, particularly given their limited experience in the discipline compared to some of their competitors.
The duo also expressed optimism that their achievement could encourage greater interest in HYROX among Guyanese fitness enthusiasts and eventually lead to the introduction of local competitions.
HYROX is an international fitness racing competition that combines endurance running with functional strength exercises. Participants complete eight one-kilometre runs, with each running segment followed by a demanding workout station.
The eight stations feature sled pushes, sled pulls, rowing, SkiErg, burpee broad jumps, farmer’s carries, sandbag lunges and wall balls.
The competition challenges athletes’ cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, stamina and mental resilience.
In the Doubles division, two athletes complete the running segments together while sharing the workload at the eight exercise stations, requiring teamwork, coordination and physical conditioning.
Although the discipline has not yet established a competitive presence in Guyana, neighbouring Suriname has already hosted three HYROX competitions, demonstrating its growing popularity in the region.
The third-place finish by Mahadeo and McDonald represents an encouraging start for Guyanese athletes in the sport and could help generate interest in establishing HYROX competitions locally.
Their performance, along with the participation of Pearce and Ramsarran, also provides a foundation for greater Guyanese involvement in future regional events.
