Davion Mars has etched his name into the history of the Pegasus Weekly Chess League after winning its inaugural championship with six points from seven rounds, as the competition concluded on Monday, October 26, at the Pegasus Hotel in Georgetown.

Mars secured the title with a round to spare, having established an unassailable 1.5-point lead over his closest challengers following Round Six.
Chess coaches Keron Sandiford and Oluwadare Oyeyipo completed the podium with five points each, with Sandiford claiming second place through the tournament’s tiebreak system.
The final round produced an exciting contest for the remaining podium positions, as Sandiford, Oyeyipo and Jaden Taylor entered the evening tied on four points.
Sandiford faced Martin Poon, while Oyeyipo and Taylor met in a direct battle that would influence the final standings.
Drawing on his experience at the Chess Olympiad, Sandiford produced a strong positional performance to defeat Poon and move to five points. However, his final placing remained uncertain until the conclusion of the encounter between Oyeyipo and Taylor.
That match delivered the evening’s most dramatic finish, with Oyeyipo initially gaining a significant advantage following a tactical pin created by a pawn recapture.
By move 14, Oyeyipo had established an estimated evaluation of +5 and collected several pawns. However, the contest shifted when he lost a bishop, allowing Taylor an opportunity to recover.
Taylor subsequently made a costly miscalculation that enabled Oyeyipo to regain the bishop and restore his advantage.
With an extra piece and a substantial pawn majority, Oyeyipo converted his superior position, forcing Taylor to resign on move 35.
The result moved Oyeyipo level with Sandiford on five points, but the application of the tournament’s tiebreak rules placed Sandiford second and Oyeyipo third.
Mars, meanwhile, finished one point clear of both players to become the competition’s first champion.
Young chess player Sachin Beharry also received recognition as the league’s Best Newcomer for his participation during the inaugural season.
The competition, organised by Drayton’s Chess Club in partnership with the Pegasus Chess Club and the Guyana Chess Federation, provides players with regular opportunities to compete in structured chess matches.
Following the successful completion of the opening season, organisers are preparing for Season Two, which begins on Monday, November 2, at the Pegasus Hotel.
The competition will maintain its weekly Monday evening format, while tournament updates, results and round-by-round coverage will be available through Drayton’s Chess Club on Facebook.
