In what was a clash of newcomers in the Berbice Football Association’s (BFA) West Berbice League, Mahaicony defeated Hopetown United Rangers 2-0.
Enjoying home advantage, Mahaicony scored both goals before the half time break, with Keyon Halley slotting home the first in the 31st minute. Twelve minutes later, Delbert Peters doubled the lead.
However, the match ended 15 minutes from the full time when Lwon Garraway of Hopetown United Rangers was given a red card for leaving the pitch without permission and abusive language.
In the other game of the competition to date, Rosignol United and Paradise Invaders played to a nil-all stalemate although Rosignol had two failed attempts at scoring through Akeem Rigby and Marlon Nicholson.
The competition will continue today with host Mahaicony playing Rosignol United from 16:00h. On Sunday, the Rosignol ground will feature a double-header with Hopetown United Rangers tackling Paradise Invaders at 16:00h and Rosignol United Under-16 playing Paradise Invaders Under-16 in the curtain raiser at 14:00h.
