Mahdia residents benefitting from major expansion of hospital services

– as new surgery staff, digital X-Ray & oxygen plant installed at facility

Residents of Mahdia Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) are now better served at the Mahdia Hospital after a number of improvements have been made there, according to Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony. “We have 14 doctors at the Mahdia Hospital, including a surgeon and anesthesiologist. So, they can perform their own surgeries up there, and you have a number of specialists available, so that’s just one example of the kinds of improvements that are happening,” Dr Anthony pointed out during an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI). He added that a new digital X-ray has also been installed so that people do not have to travel to Georgetown to have those services done.
“At Mahdia, we have put in a new oxygen plant, so the hospital manufactures its own oxygen, rather than us trying to transport oxygen from Georgetown to Mahdia. They are producing it on the site of the hospital,” the Health Minister said. Further, a new ophthalmology department has also been set up with modern equipment, while a new dental unit has also been installed. “So, things that they weren’t able to do before, they are now able to do at the Mahdia Hospital,” he explained. The rehab department has also been rehabilitated so people who need the services can access it. There is also a new Malaria Department, a new operating theatre, and a new laboratory. “And we are not done yet because we are putting in new wards in the hospital… You can see the transformation that is happening,” the Health Minister said.
The Government is also in the process of establishing new hospitals in Bartica, Lethem, Kato, Moruca and Kamarang and upgrading all health facilities to decentralise services to all parts of the country. “We are very proud of the transformation that is happening, but more importantly, patients can now benefit from these services; to us, that is the most important thing,” Minister Anthony related.
