A 27-year-old mentally-challenged man was on Wednesday beaten and shot by a group of men after he reportedly destroyed a quantity of items that allegedly belonged to one of the suspects.
Injured: Michael Shepherd
The injured man has been identified as Michael Shepherd of Lot 101 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
In an interview with Guyana Times, the young man’s mother, Abiola Shepherd explained that she was at Bent Street, Georgetown when she received a call informing her what her son had done. As she was making her way to Leopold Street, she received a second call and was informed that her son was beaten and shot by a group of men.
The woman said as she arrived at her son’s home, she saw him lying in a pool of blood and upon enquiring, she was told that five persons had committed the act.
“He is not in his sound mind; we went all over to get help for him, and is bare turn down. We went all to the Police to render him assistance so that he can receive medical attention, and they turn we down…,” she explained.
Shepherd noted that the family took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital and while he was awaiting medical attention, he left the medical facility.
She noted that she was at home grabbing some items to take for him, but in the process, she saw a taxi pull up in front of her home and he exited.
“I ask him why he come away, you have a bullet in your foot, and he said he is gonna go back in his own time,” Shepherd said.
The woman said that ever since her son returned home, she has been running to the Police begging for them to give some assistance to take him back to the hospital owing to the fact that she was unable to control him in his present state.
“After running from station to station, they finally sent a vehicle with me, and all they did was come and talk to him and nobody render me assistance,” she explained.
The injured man’s mother said she was unable to say who the perpetrators were. However, she explained that her son knew who shot him, but she was unable to get him to identify the men. He reportedly told her that he was fearful that the men would return to kill him.
No official report was made at the Police Station in the vicinity, but a statement was given at the Police Outpost at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
