Mocha Village Cup kicks off

The second annual Mocha Village Cup Street-ball Championship commenced on Saturday at the Mocha Arcadia Community Centre, East Bank Demerara.
Successful teams moved onto the next round while the teams not so lucky immediately found the tournament’s exit after losing on the opening night.
In the first game, Alwin DeMattos scored in the eighth minute to hand Church Boys a – 0 victory over Top Form. Game two saw Family win 2-0 on penalty kicks against Big Ballers after their match was goalless at regulation time.
One-n-Move then won by the same score line on penalties against Hot Skulls after they battled to a stalemate.
Mervin Squires’ goal for 6-Stars was the decider against Frontside Warriors in game four while Jermin Junior scored Strike Team’s only goal to secure victory against Mature Ballers.
In game 6, Ballers Empire held on to the lead to defeat Overseas Based Guyanese 2-1. Nicholas DeSantos and Seon Alfred put the eventual victors ahead with a goal each in the 15th and 16th minutes while Darius Thumbler pulled one back in the 17th minute for the opposition, but it was not enough to change the course of the match.
Dream Team were on their game in the penultimate match against Cricketers and eventually prevailed 1-0.
Family returned in the final match of the night to win 2-0 on penalty kicks against Church Boys.
The winner of the competition will pocket $100,000, with the runners-up slated to pocket $50,000.
On the other hand, the third and fourth-placed sides will walk away with $25,000 and $10,000 respectively.
The tournament continues at the same venue on Friday, February 1 with another round of group matches.
Sponsors of the event include the National Sports Commission; Mocha Arcadia Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC); Guyana Lottery Company; GT Beer, and Royalty Investments and Joinery Services.
