National youth cricketer Ramnauth receives gear through development project

National Under-13 cricketer Dashawn Ramnauth has become the 107th young player to benefit directly from the “Cricket Gear for Young and Promising Cricketers in Guyana” initiative.
Ramnauth, a 14-year-old student of St Winifred’s Secondary School, represents Malteenoes Sports Club. He is a left-handed batsman and bowls right-arm off-spin.
The young cricketer received a gear bag, a pair of batting pads and a protective box during a simple presentation ceremony held recently at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Community Centre.
Former Berbice senior all-rounder Luke Latiff, who now resides in Trinidad and Tobago, made the presentation while visiting Guyana. Latiff, a friend and representative of the project, congratulated Ramnauth and encouraged him to remain disciplined, work hard at his game and pay close attention to his education.
Ramnauth’s mother, Tina, expressed gratitude for the donation and promised to continue supporting her son’s cricket and academic development.

The initiative, coordinated by Anil Beharry in Guyana and Kishan Das in the United States, distributes new and used cricket equipment free of cost to talented young players. Recipients are selected based on their ability, discipline and commitment to education, while club officials also assist with identifying promising cricketers.
Progressive and well-managed clubs with active youth programmes are also considered for assistance. The organisers said the project is intended to improve the lives of young people, keep them meaningfully occupied and encourage their involvement in cricket.
Several previous beneficiaries have advanced to represent Guyana and the West Indies at different levels.
So far, the project has received or purchased GY$786,146 in cash and a wide range of equipment. Contributions include 49 bats, 40 pairs of batting pads, 48 pairs of batting gloves, 36 pairs of cricket shoes, 29 thigh pads, seven helmets, 15 gear bags, three pairs of wicketkeeping pads, six arm guards, two chest pads, stumps, uniforms, trophies, protective boxes, and red and white cricket balls. Twenty-eight footballs were also donated.
Former national wicketkeeper-batsman Sheik Mohammed separately contributed equipment valued at more than GY$600,000. All cash received is used to purchase requested items that are unavailable among the donated supplies.
To date, 107 male and female players from Demerara, Berbice, and Essequibo have directly received gear or financial assistance, while many others have benefited through donations to clubs, schools, cricket boards, and community programmes.
The project has been supported by businesses, cricket clubs and individuals in Guyana and overseas, including West Indian Sports Complex, Option Group USA, P&P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Limited, Trophy Stall, Star Sports Awards and Trophies, Cricket Zone USA, Cricket Equipment Guyana, Regal Sports Store, DX Sports, Rockaway Group of Companies, NALICO/NAFICO, Kaieteur Cricket Club of Canada, and several US-based cricket clubs.
Beharry and Das also thanked the project’s numerous individual contributors and the media for helping to promote the initiative. Distribution will continue across Guyana.
