…body cameras for baggage screeners, law enforcement officers
Works are progressing on the installation of a new baggage handling system at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), with completion expected next month, according to the airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Ramesh Ghir.
The new system is expected to change the way departing passengers process their checked luggage by allowing bags to be dropped off directly at airline counters, where screening will be conducted remotely. New baggage scanners are also being installed as part of the upgrade.
Ghir said the project will simplify the departure process for passengers by removing the need for travelers to manually transport checked luggage to a separate scanning area after checking in.
“This upgrade represents a major shift in how we process departures,” Ghir stated. “Passengers will no longer be required to manually take their checked luggage to a separate scanner after checking in, making the journey through our airport significantly smoother.”
The airport’s CEO said the new baggage handling system is also expected to improve operational efficiency for airlines while strengthening the integrity of the check-in process.
As part of the security enhancements, additional cameras are being installed to provide continuous CCTV coverage from the point a bag is checked in until it is loaded onto an aircraft. The airport is also introducing body-worn cameras for baggage screeners and law enforcement personnel involved in the baggage handling process.
According to Ghir, the measures are aimed at improving accountability and transparency throughout the system.
“We are introducing multiple layers of accountability,” he said. “The integration of advanced CCTV coverage alongside body-worn cameras for our screeners and law enforcement personnel ensures total transparency, reinforces safety, and secures the integrity of our entire baggage handling operation.”
The airport administration said the project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize operations and enhance the travel experience at Guyana’s main international gateway.
