Nurse, fiancé charged for narco-trafficking

A nurse attached to the Herstelling Health Centre was on Thursday charged jointly with her fiancé for narcotics possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Shellyann Gilgeous, 27, of 1139 Providence New Scheme, East Bank Demerara and Lansdale Hope, 34, of the same address, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
According to facts presented to the court, on April 23, 2018,  ranks attached to the Police Narcotics Branch acting on intelligence intercepted the duo who was at the time travelling in motor vehicle PSS 2037.
A search was carried out on the said vehicle and 66 grams of amphetamine (ecstasy) was found concealed in the woman’s hand bag.
Gilgeous then told the ranks that it was given to her by Hope for safe-keeping.
They were both arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.
Defence lawyer Dexter Todd, in his application for bail, asked that it be granted in a small sum.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail citing that the defendants gave statements which were recorded and signed by them.
Magistrate McLennan granted bail in the sum of $150,000 each and ordered the couple to report to the Providence Magistrate’s Court this and every Monday until the matter was resolved.
The case was adjourned until May 28, 2018.
