Nursery Table Tennis summer camp gets underway today

The 2026 Nursery Table Tennis Sports Academy Summer Camp will get underway today at the New National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, with several persons registered to participate.
Programme coordinator Linden Johnson told this publication that registrations have been received for both the theoretical and practical segments of the camp, which is being held under the theme “Teach Them Young”.
The two-week programme is being organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission in collaboration with the Guyana Table Tennis Association.
The camp targets boys and girls aged 16 and under and is expected to introduce more than 60 participants to the fundamentals of table tennis. Sessions will be held from Monday to Friday between 10:00h and noon, with the programme scheduled to conclude on July 24.
This year’s camp will also include players from Berbice, Bartica, Linden and Essequibo as organisers continue efforts to develop the sport outside Georgetown.
Participants will receive instruction in the basic techniques of the game while being given opportunities to practise their skills in a structured and engaging environment. The programme is also intended to identify talented players, prepare them for future tournaments and encourage healthy competitive habits.
The theoretical component will provide participants with knowledge of the sport, while the practical sessions will allow them to gain first-hand experience at the table.
A novice category has also been included to attract children who have limited or no previous experience in table tennis. The sessions will be conducted by certified International Table Tennis Federation Level One and Level Two coaches.
Participants will be required to maintain an attendance rate of at least 90 per cent to receive certificates at the end of the programme.
Over the years, the camp has helped to produce several of Guyana’s leading mini-cadet, pre-cadet, cadet, junior and senior players.
Among those who have passed through the programme are Trenace Lowe, Zach Gonsalves, Jonathan Sankar, Edinho Lewis, Matthew Khan, Christopher Franklin, Jody-Ann Blake, Michelle John, Natalie Cummings, Joseph Johnson, Sunil Logan, Gibran Sarfaraz, Vikash Panday, Priyanna Ramdhani, Nigel Bryan, Joel Alleyne, Warren Hackshaw, Elishaba Johnson, Jamaal Duff, Kristie Lopes, Chelsea Edghill, Kyle Edghill, Shemar Britton, Selenas Jackman, Khalil Ninvalle, Terrance Rausch, Kaysan Ninvalle, Jonathan Van Lange, Jasmine Billingy, Thuraia Thomas, Zamani Johnson, and Abiniora Johnson.
