NYC construction worker nabbed at CJIA with cocaine

An overseas-based Guyanese was on Saturday nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) with almost three pounds of cocaine stashed in the walls of his suitcase.
The 45-year-old man, a resident of Brooklyn, New York, arrived in Guyana before the Christmas holidays and was staying at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.bagged_cocaine
However, he was about to board a Dynamic Airways Flight on Saturday when he was intercepted by members of the Custom Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) after they detected strange objects in the walls of his suitcase. The suitcase was pulled and a search was carried out.
During a closer inspection of the objects, it proved to be that of the illegal substance. He was taken into custody, where the cocaine was weighed in his presence and amounted to 1.5kg. He is expected to be charged shortly.
This was the second bust of the year for CANU. As recent as January 4, a Guyanese woman, who was destined for Antigua, was busted at the Eugene F Correia International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara, with close to 10 pounds of cocaine in her suitcase.
Clarabel Thompson, 24, of Georgetown, was about to board a Liat Flight when CANU members detected the anomalies, while her suitcase was in the scanner.
A search was subsequently conducted, during which several packets of the illegal substance were unearthed in the sides of the suitcase. The illegal substance was taken to CANU’s headquarters where it was weighed and amounted to 4.2Kgs.
Thompson was later charged and remanded to prison.
