Opposition Leader calls for 2 days of mourning to honour slain Berbice teens

Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon has expressed his shock at the way in which Isaiah and Joel Henry were murdered and called on all Guyanese to observe two days of mourning to honour the boys.

Isaiah and Joel were hacked to death sometime between Friday and Saturday at Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice. The cousins left their Number 3 Village, WCB home to go pick coconuts in the backdam.

Harmon visited the families on Monday where he shared their grief.

“This is an unspeakable crime that has left the nation outraged and in a state of shock. The tears and emotions which I have seen in the past 24 hours from all segments of our society speak to the inhumane and barbaric nature of this crime which has shaken the soul of this country.

“It is therefore appropriate and right, for us, as a nation, to observe two days of mourning for the loss of these two boys – Joel and Isaiah Henry. I call on all Guyanese to observe two days of mourning tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8th and Wednesday, September 9th,” he said in a statement.

He also committed his Party’s support to the families and indicated that they would be covering the funeral expenses for the two boys.

The Opposition Leader also demanded that the Guyana Police Force “spares no effort or resource in conducting a thorough and comprehensive investigation without any delay and arrest all the perpetrators of this crime and bring them to justice.”

He also issued a call for any person with information to contact the Police.
