Ranks of the Guyana Police Force have launched an investigation into repeated attacks on the Suriname Embassy in Guyana, located at the corner of Anira and New Garden Streets, Queenstown, Georgetown.
In the latest known attempt, which occurred on Wednesday at around 01:00h, Molotov Cocktails – also known as petrol bombs – were thrown at the building.
A security officer on duty recalled seeing two fireball objects heading in the direction of the embassy.
The Police were immediately summoned, and two bottles of suspected flammable liquid and a burnt-out tyre were found on the scene.
Guyana Times understands that this is not the first incident of its kind to occur at the embassy. On Saturday last, there was a similar incident, but the flammable liquid hit a tree, which ended up being scorched.
Suriname’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Politics, Albert Ramdin, commenting on the issue, said he received word from the Government of Guyana, and they are monitoring the situation.
“We have no indication that it has anything to do with politics. Staff is safe,” the Surinamese Minister is quoted as saying in a StarNieuws report.
Only two weeks ago, an attempt was made to burn down one of Guyana’s famed landmarks, the Umana Yana. Quick action by a female constable who was on guard duty prevented the fire, which was already set, from escalating.
Fires have also been set to other public buildings, like the Office of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) in Linden, Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice); the Suddie Magistrates Court, the Anna Regina Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, and a GDF Base at Maria’s Lodge – all on the Essequibo Coast in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Authorities had said it was too early to determine whether the fires were politically motivated. (G9)
