Police yet to arrest suspect for murder of clothes vendor

Wanted: Shawn Jones

Police are yet to make an arrest for the murder of Paul Anthony Smith, a clothes vendor who was shot dead during a row over a female on New Year’s Day at the East Coast minibus park.
The 32-year-old father of four of Bent Street Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, was killed in cold blood, and Police are still making stringent efforts to apprehend the suspect.
Regional Commander for Georgetown, Khail Pareshram on Tuesday said no arrests have been made and that the detectives are still working to locate the shooter.
One week after the incident, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) had issued a wanted bulletin for the father of a man who was initially arrested for the murder.
The suspect, Shawn Jones, is wanted for questioning in connection with Smith’s murder.
It is alleged that on New Year’s Day, Smith, who plied his trade at the East Coast minibus park, was shot dead at Commerce Street, Georgetown.

Dead: Paul Anthony Smith, aka “Blacka”

It was reported that the now dead vendor was heading to his parked car carrying a cutlass in his hands. Soon after, the suspect, who is also a clothes vendor, whipped out a gun and discharged a round, hitting Smith.
Due to the injury, Smith reportedly fell onto the front passenger seat of his car but he was picked up by public-spirited citizens who rushed to his aid and took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Following the shooting incident, Police had arrested a 21-year-old man, but after investigators received new information, their focus had shifted to the man’s 54-year-old father.
Police confirmed that several checks were made for Jones at his residence but all came up empty-handed. Police investigations are ongoing.
