President’s College, Marian Academy book U-14 Finals spot
A triumphant President’s College U-14 boys’ side clinched a spot in the Under-14 finals of the National Schools Basketball Festival with an easy win over St Joseph’s High. They scored 32 points to St Joseph’s 18 points in the GT/East Coast Regional semi-finals playoffs as the competition continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Friday.
Gabriel Lin was the top-scorer with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals; while Joshua Butts, with 10 points and 6 rebounds, led PC to a comfortable win.
Shaqeem Wilson with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and Jaheim Jardine who added 4 points put up a feeble resistance for St. Joseph’s.
The President’s College girls emulated their male counterparts and will also head to the Regional finals in the women’s division. They eliminated The Bishops’ High female unit 22points to 14 points in a low-scoring affair.
Analisa Barclay top scored with 11 points, while Saffiya Green added 6 points before fouling out for President’s College.
Demelza Nicholas was the lone ranger for Bishops, with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
In the second U-14 male semifinal, Marian Academy breezed past the Bishops’ High by 32 points to 11 points, to join President’s College in the first final of the 2017 Regionals.
Ethan Fernandes had a game high 10 points, 4 steals for the Marian Academy side, while teammates Jether Harris and Meshal Allicock chipped in with 7 points and 6 points and 4 rebounds respectively.
Shamar Light’s 4 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals, coupled with Keon Bacchus’s 4 points, were not enough for the Bishops’ side.
The U-16 President’s College males needed extra time to outlast The Bishops’ High 34 points to 32 in the under 16 semis, giving PC a perfect three from three for the night.
Lanon Friday scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds, and Akinyele Darrell added 10 points for the victorious PC side.
Royden Gladsgow scored 10 points, while Nkose Branche contributed 6 points and 11 rebounds in reply for BHS.
St Rose’s High proved once again that they are the best under-16 unit by stopping Marian Academy 38 points to 26 points to set up a highly anticipated clash with PC in the finals.
Anthony Yansen with 18 points, 6 steals and Kwesi Roberts with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 7 steals proved too much for the Marian defense.
Jether Harris scored 9 points and 8 rebounds in a losing effort for Marian Academy.
The Regionals will continue today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, with the second Girls’ semi-final between Marian Academy and St Rose’s beginning at 4pm. This will be followed by four Under-19 quarter-finals.
The Georgetown/ East Coast Regional FINALS are set for Friday, June 30th.
