The Berbice cricket giants, Rose Hall Town Bakewell defeated the Ramnarine Memorial cricket team from No 43 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. In the quarter-final match that was played at the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground on Saturday, Rose Hall Town completed a 117-run victory.
On what looked a slow surface at Port Mourant, Rose Hall Town took first strike under clear blue skies. In front of noisy cricket enthusiasts, Kevin and Junior Sinclair went out to bat, to face the likes of Roydon Gray and the Tyndall brothers. Kevin Sinclair, the Captain, opened his account with three runs in the large Port Mourant outfield.
Junior Sinclair departed for six with the partnership on 18 runs when he was bowled all over the place by Jason Gray. Surrendra Kissoonlal then partnered Kevin Sinclair and they took the score up to 48, before the Captain departed for a composed 29 that included three boundaries. He was out caught by Paul Tyndall. The classy Windies Under-19 selectee, Kevlon Anderson came to the crease with the score on 48-2, but he was caught behind for only eight by a lively Paul Tyndall.
Keith Simpson then partnered Kissoonlal as the duo began to rebuild the innings, to post a good target. Simpson was trapped in front by Potya for 10, bringing the Kissoonlal dominated partnership of 60 to an end. National Under-15 batsman Jonathan Rampersaud was the only other Rose Hall batsman to make a significant contribution, batting at number seven.
Kissoonlal, a former Berbice youth player, rolled back some memories when he stroked a valuable 62. The left-hander displayed an array of shots, entertaining the spectators who saw Windies female selectee Sheneta Grimmond. Kissoonlal’s knock included four boundaries and two sixes that were hit straight into the southern sight screen on the fairly large Port Mourant Ground. After Kissoonlal was out caught at square leg off the bowling of Roydon Gray with the score on 154-5, Rampersaud’s innings of 34 ensured his team reached a good total of 202-9. In the final overs, Sylus Tyndall hit one six over long on in his quick-fire 11. Ramnarine Memorial bowlers, in Jason and Roydon Gray shared six wickets between themselves. Jason Gray, the left-arm seamer, had 3-30 in five overs while the former Berbice youth right-arm quickie had 3-41 in eight overs.
In pursuit of the target, Ramnarine Memorial were out of sorts, openers Clifford Gray and Kegan Sampson went out to face the music, of the fiery Sylus Tyndall. The Rose Hall Town bowlers were disciplined and kept chipping away with wickets. Only Paul Tyndall offered resistance after he was gifted with two opportunities. He was involved in a miscommunication with his strike partner and was given an opportunity when female player, Erva Giddings missed the stumps.
It was a heated battle with Paul Tyndall and his brother who plays for the opposition. However, Guyana female fast bowler, Giddings got the final laugh when she outfoxed Paul Tyndall with a well-disguised slower ball. He scored 27 and Kegan Sampson scored 12, in an ordinary batting display. Ramnarine Memorial were bowled out for 86.
National off-spinner Kevin Sinclair had mesmerising figures of 3-20 while star off-spinner Junior Sinclair had 2-3 in 13 testing deliveries. Erva Giddings had two wickets while Kevlon Anderson and Sylus Tyndall had one each. Rose Hall Town will play No 72 Cut and Load in the much-anticipated semi-final of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB-New Building Society (NBS) Second-Division tournament at the No 72 Ground.
