Several persons including six children were treated at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and sent away on Sunday evening after a speeding vehicle belonging to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) collided with a motor car along the Bee Hive Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The car that was involved in the accident
Based on reports received, the accident occurred at about 18:45h and involved a GDF motor pick-up driven by a Corporal stationed at Camp Ayanganna and the motor car driven by a 19-year-old of Greenfield North, ECD, with several occupants including six children, aged six to 16.
Police investigations have since revealed that the GDF pick-up was proceeding along the roadway in the vicinity of Bee Hive Public Road at a fast rate behind three vehicles. However, the driver of the pick-up started to overtake the vehicles and at the same time, the motor car attempted to turn into the Bee Hive access road.
The GDF pick-up after the accident
As a result, the front portion of the pick-up collided with the right side of the motor car, causing both drivers to lose control and end up in a trench. The occupants of the vehicles were pulled from the trench by other soldiers who were travelling behind.
They would have sustained minor injuries but were taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where they were treated and sent away. A breathalyser test was conducted on the soldier but there was no trace of alcohol in his system.
