Sookra’s half-century leads D’Edward SC to championship win

BCB/Perry Gossai Memorial 100 ball final…

The Bush Lot cricket ground in West Berbice witnessed a heated contest between the undefeated teams in the BCB/Perry Gossai Memorial 100 ball tournament as the finale of that tournament was played.
Those teams were D’Edward Sports Club and Cotton Tree Die Hard; and D’ Edward SC defeated Cotton Tree Die Hard by 31 runs in that historic tournament.
Batting first on a wicket that was over-soaked and made sticky by the grounds men, D’ Edward mustered 155-5 in their allotted 100-ball innings. Player of the match, Lakeray Sookra, smashed a brilliant 61 to lead the D’ Edward charge.
In reply, Cotton Tree Die Hard were bundled out for 124, with Marlon Deputron scoring 32. Abdool Subhan was the chief wicket-taker for D’ Edward with 3-23.
Earlier, D’ Edward lost Altaf Khan for four runs as the score was at 13-1, but Lakeray Sookra and Devindra Lalsa added 53 runs in a partnership that revived the innings.

The winning D’Edward team

Lalsa was out caught for 28 from 14 balls, becoming Pooran Persaud’s first wicket when the score was at 66-2 inside eight overs.
The right-handed Sookra looked solid as he faced 41 balls in his innings of 61, which was decorated with six boundaries and three sixes. The stands were filled with more than 200 supporters as they witnessed Subhan adding the finishing touches to the D’ Edward innings with an unbeaten 29 from 12 balls.
D’ Edward posted a good total of 155-5 in 100 balls, and Cotton Tree Die Hard’s Persaud had 2-23 in three overs.
In hot pursuit of the target, Cotton Tree lost three quick wickets. At 21-3 in five overs, Nick Ramsaroop (10), Daniel Harrynarine (07) an Pooran Persaud (00) were already sent to the dug-out.
A 43-run stand between the Gaffoor boys led the mini-resurgence, but it was insufficient for a victory. Batting at number seven, Marlon Deputron smashed a top-score of 32 that included four boundaries and one six. Fast bowler Subhan had 3-23 in 4.2 overs for the eventual victors. (Brandon Corlette)
