Surinamese national found dead in trench was threatened – mother
The mother of the Surinamese national whose body was discovered in a trench at Port Mourant, Corentyne Berbice last month alleged that her son was threatened and was planning to return home before the end of the year.
The body of 23-year-old Marciano Michel Nelson, also called ‘Dutchie’, a labourer of Bangladesh, Port Mourant was discovered dead with marks of violence on December 22, 2024.
His mother, Meudich Nelom who resides in Suriname referred to her son as someone who was involved in mischief but at the same time, he was a ‘good boy’ while adding he willingly assisted when called upon.
Asked to elaborate on her son’s mischievousness, the aggrieved mother related that as a kid he was always with a slingshot. She could not say why her son left Suriname for Guyana.
“The only thing I know is that he came with a woman; I don’t even know that woman… since they reached Guyana, they parted.”
The woman noted that she last spoke with her son on December 2, 2024, and during the conversation, he stated that he would have been to return to Suriname by the end of the year.
Nelson was killed three days after celebrating his birthday while noting that it was on his father’s birthday they received the news of his demise.
However, it was during her conversation with Nelson he told her that he was being threatened.
“I didn’t know it was so serious. If I only know I would come and pick him up myself. I didn’t know it was that bad.”
The mother told this publication she understands that her son was killed because he was a police witness to a pending murder case. “He didn’t do anything, he was just a witness…”
She, nevertheless, seeks justice for her son’s death. “There are still people in the streets walking free; she is walking free… she is the brain of the whole operation. When I saw my boy he had no defenses wounds, he couldn’t defend himself. If he could have defended himself, he would have been chopped on his forearm; they came from the back,” she explained.
Three persons have since been arraigned with the murder of Nelson. Nicholas Chinarine and his brother Christopher Chinarine, along with Michael Anthony Brijjader all of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice are on remand.
The charges were implemented after the two brothers allegedly confessed to killing the Surinamese national and dumping his body in a trench at Port Morant. (Andrew Carmichael)
