Teen jailed for stealing cellphone

After being convicted twice for simple larceny in 2018, 19-year-old Shakeem Mentore made yet another court appearance before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus facing similar charges.
The unrepresented teen admitted that on January 17, 2019, at Croal Street, Stabroek, Georgetown he stole one Samsung Galaxy cellphone worth $140,000; property of Nicholas Gangaram.
The prosecution’s case presented by Police Prosecutor Quinn Harris contended that the teen approached the Virtual Complainant from behind and snatched the phone which was in the VC’s hand at the time. Public spirited persons gave chase and the defendant was apprehended.
Meanwhile, a probation report presented to the court revealed that the teen who resides with his grandmother, stole the phone with intentions to sell it and purchase a bicycle. However, Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus jailed the teen for 15 months and advised him to not appear before her again.
