Teen mom arrested for killing crying toddler

An 18-year-old mother of Jango Street, Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo, is now in Police custody after she allegedly killed her 21-month-old son.
Reports are that the young mother reportedly killed the child on Friday. Guyana Times understands the mother and the child, who had a physical disability, were returning from an outing at about 19:00h, when the child began to cry.
She told Police that she then wrapped the child in a blanket and left him at the side of the road in a clump of bushes. According to the woman’s statement to investigators, she went to someone’s house in close proximately to beg the person to make some tea for the child. It was then that the resident asked her about the whereabouts of the child and she bolted from the house. Police were told that the woman, in a fit to escape, jumped into a nearby canal but was nonetheless cornered by a resident. The resident called the Police and also informed the woman’s brother, who lives nearby, about the occurrence. After being questioned about the toddler’s location, the woman took Police to the area where she had left the child. However, his lifeless body was fished out of the drain and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The woman was taken into custody at the Parika Police Station as Police continue their investigation and await a post-mortem examination.
