Nineteen-year-old Rashane Joseph was on Monday committed to stand trial for the unlawful killing of his 41-year-old father, Collin Joseph.
Rashane called “John Crow” of Spencer Street, Ithaca, West Coast Berbice, has not been required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that he unlawfully killed his father on August 16, 2020.
At the end of a Preliminary Inquiry, Magistrate Peter Hugh, sitting at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court, ruled that a prima facie case was made out against him to put him on trial for the offence at the Berbice High Court.
Accordingly, the accused killer was committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Berbice Criminal Assizes. Rashane remains on $100,000 bail pending the hearing and determination of that trial.
It was previously reported that Collin called “Underdog”, a father of four, was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after his son inflicted injuries on him with a cutlass.
Reports are that the cattle farmer and his teen son had a misunderstanding on the day in question during which they accused each other of using each other’s belongings. They also reportedly threatened to kill each other.
They later had another confrontation after which the teenager went home and was followed by his father. This led to an argument during which both of them armed themselves with cutlasses.
As the argument escalated, the now dead man threw his cutlass at his son, but it missed him. In retaliation, the son threw his cutlass at the father and it struck him in the right side of his chest.
Collin started to bleed profusely and then collapsed. It was reported that the teenager suffered years of abuse at the hands of his father. (G1)
