A series of intelligence-led, and routine police operations, carried out across the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) over a three-day period, has resulted in the discovery of quantities of suspected cannabis and the detention of three men from different communities. The most recent discovery was made on Saturday, in the Covent Garden Squatting Area, where ranks, acting on information about illegal activities, proceeded to a street in the area at approximately 13:35h. Upon arrival, police observed a black motorcar parked on the roadway, and made contact with a 47-year-old welder of Lot Prospect, EBD, who identified himself as the owner of the vehicle. A search was requested and carried out. While nothing illegal was found on the man’s person, a further search of the vehicle revealed a bulky plastic bag containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The man was cautioned, arrested and escorted to the Providence Police Station, where the suspected narcotics were weighed in his presence and amounted to 110.15 grams. The cannabis was marked, sealed, and lodged and the suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. On Friday, an intelligence-led operation conducted at approximately 17:30h in Timehri North, EBD, led ranks on patrol to the residence of a farmer. Although a search of the house yielded nothing illegal, a subsequent search of the yard, carried out in the presence of the suspect, resulted in the discovery of a black plastic bag hidden along the western fence line.
Inside were twenty-three red transparent plastic bags and 10 transparent zip-lock bags containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. The farmer was informed of the offence, cautioned and arrested before being escorted to the Timehri Police Station, where the suspected cannabis was weighed and amounted to 97 grams. The narcotics were later marked, sealed, and lodged. The first of the three incidents occurred on Thursday, during a police operation at a business premises in Mocha Arcadia, EBD. At about 19:15h, ranks acting on information received, went to a shop in the area and made contact with a 57-year-old businessman.
A search was requested and conducted. While nothing illegal was found on the man’s person, a search of the shop revealed several small transparent zip-lock bags containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, which were found on the shop floor.
The businessman was cautioned, arrested and escorted to the Farm/Herstelling Police Station, where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to 13.96 grams. The items were marked, sealed and lodged.
Police have confirmed that investigations into all three matters are ongoing as efforts continue to combat the possession and distribution of illicit drugs across communities on the East Bank of Demerara.
