Dolphin Speed Swim Club tallied an impressive 510.5 points to emerge Club Champions when the Torpedo Swim Club of Linden staged its Linden Town Week Swim Meet at the Toucan Mall Swim Pool in the mining town to mark the town’s 56th anniversary celebrations.
Some seven clubs participated in the successful meet where 76 races were held in several age categories, where hosts Torpedo had to settle for second position after gaining 481 points, finishing ahead of third-placed Sea Otters Swim Club with 377 points.
Following the podium finishers were fourth-placed Mafra Swim Club on 154 points, ahead of Orca Speed Swim Club with 152.5 points and Dorado Swim Club with 98.5 points, and the cellar position was taken by Silver Sharks Aquatic Swim Club, who were on 47 points.
The various Champion Swimmers were Six and Under Boys Champion Reheem McLean of Torpedo Swim Club, Six and Under Girls Champion Kitana Parsram of Orca Swim Club, 7–8 Boys Champion Alonzo Simon of Mafra Swim Club, 7–8 Girls Champion Keyana Welcome of Mafra Swim Club, Eight and Under Boys Champion Eshwar Roopnarine of Dolphin Speed Swim Club, Eight and Under Girls Champion Adelaide Roberts of Sea Otters Swim Club, 9–10 Boys Champion Chianand Roopnarine of Dolphin Speed Swim Club, and 9–10 Girls Champion Aria McKoy of Sea Otters Swim Club.
In other results, 11–12 Boys Champion Malakhiy Patokie of Dolphin Speed Swim Club, 11–12 Girls Champion Rebha Lachhman of Orca swim Club, 13–14 Girls Champion Akiesha Pulmeyere of Torpedo, 13–14 Boys Champion Jelani Oding of Sea Otters Swim Club, 15–17 years Boys Champion Zidan John of Torpedo Swim Club, 15–17 Girls Champion Shareefah Lewis of Sea Otters Swim Club, and the 18 years and over Boys Champion Paul Mahaica of the Dolphin Speed Swim Club.
The Youngest Male Swimmer was three-year-old Josiah Denny of Torpedo Swim Club, Youngest Female Swimmer, five-year-old Kitana Parsram; the oldest male swimmer was 22-year-old Chaill Goddette of Sea Otters Swim Club; and the Oldest Female swimmer was 22-year-old Latisha Blair.
The event, which was sanctioned by the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA), was used as a Time Trial for the Goodwill Games to be held in Trinidad and Tobago in August.
The coordinator of the swim meet, Ms Mary Chung-Phillips, informed us that based on feedback, it is expected to be an annual Linden Town Week event. She noted several sponsors donated trophies, medals and food hampers, which ensured that the meet was a success. These include the Linden Fund Canada, Joann Dhanpaul and Family and the Toucan Mall. Neville “Zipper” Johnson; Nazeema and Lenworth Warner; Trim Brothers John and Grenville, aka “Bonny”, and Avery (Sr); Ryan Lewis and Family; McRae’s Hardware Store; Colin Rodney and Sons; Dr Deon Anderson; Omali Dare; Linden Mayor and Town Council; and the Torpedo Swim Club.
