Venezuelan arraigned for murder of Anna Catherina construction worker

A Venezuelan national was on Wednesday remanded to prison for the murder of 21-year-old Sanjay Hanoman, who bled to death after he was chopped to his leg on Sunday last.

Dead: Sanjay Hanoman

The suspect, 22-year-old Nestor Luis Bolivar Martines, also known as ‘Carlos,’ a labourer of Sixth Street, Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD), appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plead to the indictment.
The court heard that on October 25, 2020, at about 23:30h, the victim and the suspect were standing at Bus Shed Street, Anna Catherina WCD when Martines, who was armed with a cutlass, chopped Hanoman to his leg and rode away.
Hanoman’s friend, who witnessed the incident, immediately went to his assistance and observed blood oozing from his leg. The 17-year-old friend attempted to get help, but was unable to do so by himself, since no one else was willing to assist the injured young man to get to the hospital.
About one hour after the chopping incident, Hanoman was finally taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, but he died while receiving medical attention.
Later that evening, Police, acting on information received, arrested the suspect at his home, and he has since confessed to the heinous crime.
The matter before Magistrate Ally-Seepaul has been adjourned until January 13, 2021.
